Format: Face-to-face, interactive workshop Audience: Early years professional, parents and families Part 1: Understanding ACEs and Trauma Introduction to ACEs: Overview of adverse childhood experiences, including types and prevalence. Interactive activity on recognising signs of trauma in children. Impact of Trauma on Development: Discussion on how trauma affects children's learning, behaviour, and long-term outcomes. Introduction to the brain science behind trauma. Part 2: Trauma-Informed Practice Strategies Basics of Trauma-Informed Care: Key principles of trauma-informed care and how they can be applied in early years settings. Group discussion on case studies to identify trauma-informed approaches. Interventions and Support: Exploration of specific interventions and support strategies for children experiencing ACEs. Interactive activities to practice trauma-informed communication and support techniques. 30-Minute Break Part 3: Building Resilience through Relationships Fostering Healthy Relationships: The importance of the relationship between families and practitioners. Strategies to build trust and support with families experiencing ACEs. Supporting Self-Regulation and Coping: Understanding the link between trauma, stressors, and self-regulation. Interactive exercises on supporting children in developing coping mechanisms. Part 4: Rethinking Behaviour Management Challenges with Traditional Approaches: Discussion on why traditional behaviour management may not be effective for children with ACEs. Group activity to critique common practices. Adopting New Approaches: Introducing alternative, trauma-informed behaviour management strategies. Workshop participants will develop a plan to implement these strategies in their settings. Closing: Summary of key learnings, group reflection on the importance of trauma-informed care, Q&A session, and guidance on further resources for deepening understanding and practice. This session is structured to be deeply engaging, with a focus on practical applications, group discussions, and hands-on activities designed to equip participants with the knowledge and tools needed to support children affected by trauma effectively.
